Mechanic
Motorcycle Backup
I run a motorcycle adventure company based in southern Spain ( www.lma.life ), leading diverse people through mid-life crises in north Africa, the Med and further afield. A working life in farming and forestry has developed mechanical aptitude, so long as no computers are involved. Not a rower, but I teach aikido and still have knees which work on a good day! I shared the pleasures of hill-walking with Tim C many years ago, and remain grateful for Louise’s contribution to our rations.
My wife, Caroline, has worked in East Africa for 24 years, and is now a ceramic artist. Son George about to start an art foundation course, and daughter Anna off to study zoology.
I’m very enthusiastic about transformative experience, and the way in which this can enhance our decisions and interactions once we return to our communities. Tackling challenges such as K18 builds confidence, enabling participants to put life’s difficulties into context. I believe that we lead best by inspiration: in setting and achieving goals, we can liberate others to do the same. If I can help the next generation with this, it’s ‘job done’!
Taking fragile craft down a powerful river where navigation knowledge might be scarce….add in hippos and crocs and the fact that no-one can predict how things will pan out….make no mistake, this is a serious challenge, so all credit to Tim and the crew who have achieved so much in earlier editions.
I can say ‘piano’ in Melanesian Pidgin, make outstanding chickpea curry and have had my bodacious dance moves critiqued in the Mail on Sunday.
